Understanding Your Options: Navigating the Health Insurance Marketplace and Special Enrollment Periods

April 15, 2024

Health Insurance Marketplace connects individuals to affordable, quality health insurance plans, and provides financial assistance to those who are eligible. The Health Insurance Marketplace helps you shop for and enroll in coverage that fits your needs and budget. Plans cover essential health benefits, pre-existing conditions, and preventive care. Plans are required to cover comprehensive essential health benefits including:

  • Outpatient care and preventative care
  • Hospital and Emergency Department Services
  • Pregnancy, Maternity and Newborn Care
  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
  • Prescription Drugs

Open Enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplace is every year from November 1st– January 15th. However, if you experience certain life events or your income estimate falls within a certain range, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in or change your Marketplace plan. A Special Enrollment Period lets you enroll in health coverage or switch plans outside of Open Enrollment.

  • Loss of Health Coverage (Like Medicaid)
  • Got married (Pick a plan by the last day of the month and your coverage can start the first day of the next month.)
  • Had a baby, adopted a child, or placed a child for foster care. Your coverage can start the day of the event — even if you enroll in the plan up to 60 days afterward.
  • Got divorced or legally separated and lost health insurance. Divorce or legal separation without losing coverage doesn’t qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Moved to a new state and had a chance in primary place of living

All of the Nebraska Health Centers have Assisters that are trained and educated in the different options for health insurance and assistance. Assisters provide free assistance with your application and also educate you about financial assistance options. They personally work with you to inform you about the best options for your budget, your health, and your future. Be sure to check out the locations tab to find an Assister nearest you. They can also help you through the process to see if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
